Man Shot as Two Bondsmen Take Him Into Custody

TOPEKA, KS – A man being arrested by two bondsmen in Kansas was shot when one of the bondsmen’s handguns accidentally fired. The gun was not aimed at the man, who had been pursued on foot but was not resisting arrest at the time of the accident. The bullet just grazed the victim’s back. The man was taken to St. Francis Health Center and was booked at Shawnee County Jail after being released from the hospital. Authorities are still investigating the incident, but released the two bondsmen after brief questioning.

In Florida, Controversy Over Pretrial Release

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – A controversy over a proposal about pre-trial release in Broward County has created a flurry of words. Public Defender Howard Finkelstein has spoken out about a public hearing to discuss the proposal. At the heart of the controversy is a program that releases and monitors defendants before their trial. Some people want to reduce detention costs and delay the building of a new jail while others oppose it.

Bounty Hunter in Casey Anthony Case to Take Polygraph

ORLANDO, FL – Bounty Hunter Leonard Padilla is said to be scheduled for a polygraph test in the case of missing toddler Caylee Anthony. The FBI allegedly wants to have Padilla take the lie detector test after the man found items in the Little Econ River that he claimed were related to the case. The media was told that the bag was full of bones and toys, but authorities discovered the bag was not related to the case. Padilla said has agreed to take the test.

PBUS Encourages Bondsmen to Help with Bail Bond Fairness Act

Stephen Kreimer, the Executive Director of the Professional Bail Agents of the United States (PBUS), is encouraging bail agents to contact their U.S. Senators to help push the Bail Bond Fairness Act into law. The Bail Bond Fairness Act tells judges that they may not forfeit a bail bond if a defendant violates a condition of the bond, only if they fail to appear in court.
