GRAND JUNCTION, CO -- Bob Cunningham of Mr. C's Bail Bonds has written to a local newspaper about Mesa County Pre-Trial services. According to the letter, the system cost $250,000 to set up and the program has already requested $400,000 more in taxpayer dollars. Cunningham notes that bondsmen cost the county nothing and get defendants out of jail faster. Cunningham also notes that the urine sample, blood work, and ankle monitoring that pre-trial services require are costly to the taxpayer and a “borderline unconstitutional” infringement on the defendant’s rights. At some trials, judges may even request that defendants use a professional bondsman and report to the pre-trial services program, a move which Cunningham feels should be made illegal.
