Two Bail Bondsmen Shot and Killed in Phoenix

Early last week, two bail bondsmen were found fatally shot outside of an apartment complex in Phoenix. The bondsmen, 37-year-old David Brickert and 39-year-old Wesley Kampen, were family men and bail agents for Sanctuary Bail Bonds.

Details about the incident

The incident occurred when Brickert and Kampen were attempting to recover a man who had skipped out on a $300 bail bond. Anthony Brian Giunta, a 25-year-old with an extensive criminal record, had been arrested on weapon and drug charges. He failed to show up for a hearing, prompting the bondsmen to seek him out.

Guinta’s prior convictions include burglary, weapons misconduct, and aggravated assault.

According to investigators, the bondsmen had Guinta in handcuffs and were walking him to the car when another person approached from behind and shot the two agents. The shooter and Guinta then fled the scene. Guinta was arrested just a few hours later and held on suspicion of misconduct with a weapon, aggravated assault, and resisting arrest. The shooter was not apprehended until later in the week.

Apprehension of the shooter

Phoenix police Sergeant Steve Martos shared early on in the investigation, “At this point, we have interviewed a number of witnesses on the scene and we have been unable to get a good identification on who the shooter is.” Guinta was not cooperating with police or investigators. Martos then turned to the community for assistance in identifying the shooter, which led law enforcement to 23-year-old alleged shooter Nicholas Malicki.

Upon his arrest, Malicki proclaimed to nearby journalists, “I didn’t kill no one. I’m innocent.” He was booked and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

About David Brickert and Wesley Kampen

Sanctuary Bail Bonds owner Ryan Mullinax, a friend and colleague of the two men, had nothing but good things to say about the fallen bondsmen. “David had the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever known. He’s gone and done things that are above and beyond not what just a bondsman to do but what a normal person would do.”

Official statement from Sanctuary Bail Bonds:

“We are saddened by the loss of two of our Sanctuary Bail Bonds family members. David leaves behind a beautiful family, his fiancé and two young children. Wesley also leaves behind his son.

We will do what we can to support the family as we all go through this difficult time. We have set up a fund to help support the family and pay for funeral costs.”

Mullinax continued, saying, “Wesley just had a huge heart and he was a lot of fun to be around. He was the guy who definitely got things done around here.”

Both men left behind children and families.

Local association president John Burns was interviewed by many news outlets about the incident. In a close-knit industry and with 280 members of the Arizona Bail Bondsmen Association President (AZBBA), Burns had worked with Sanctuary Bail Bonds on prior cases.

“I was just a few of their guys six week ago and we did a multi-company recovery of a couple of defendants,” he said. “In our industry we work together to apprehend fugitives and bring them back to custody.” Burns noted that the bond amount for Guinta was very low.

Burns describes Brickert and Kampen as very professional family men. “We lost two great agents,” he said. “Our hearts go out to the families. The bail industry in Arizona is very sorrowed.”
