Bail News Roundup - March 26, 2007

Around the water cooler this week, AboutBail.com staff had plenty to talk about. The news this past week was full of the continuing drama of Duane “Dog” Chapman and the stories of less famous bail professionals. This week, the stories of bail professionals showed again how dangerous the profession is. From the past week, the stories that got our attention were:

Hawaii Honors The Dog
Members of the Hawaii House of Representatives publicly honored bounty hunter and TV actor Duane "Dog" Chapman and his wife Beth this past week. The lawmakers praised the couple for getting fugitives and criminals behind bars, creating a safer society. Hawaii lawmakers have been supporting Chapman since he was accused of making an illegal in the June 2003 capture of rapist Andrew Luster.

Iberia Parish Shooting Targets Bounty Hunter and Bail Bondsman
The Six Star Trailer Park in Loreauville was the scene of a grisly shooting this past week. Bail bondsman Valarie King arrived at the park to collect collateral on a bond for Arthur Basaldua. She brought a bounty hunter along in case the situation turned ugly. Once the two professionals entered Basaldua’s home, shots were fired, and the pair ran outside. The gunman followed and continued shooting. Both King and the bounty hunter were shot, but the bounty hunter managed to run to a nearby home to get help. Iberia Parish Sheriff Deputies arrested three people in connection with the incident.

Bounty Hunters Again Prove Their Mettle
This past week, bounty hunters tracked down 17-year-old Kaitlyn Elizabeth Patrick, a Weirton-area teen who has been missing for almost a year. Patrick was found in a Pennsylvania motel with David Delp, 20, the man it is believed that she ran away with. Delp was wanted on two charges of burglary.

Hurricane Katrina Continues to Cause Bail Woes
Many Katrina evacuees fled to Texas following the storm that destroyed their property, but those whose loved ones ended up in jail in Texas claim that they are not being granted bond. The victims claim that Texas bail bondsmen are reluctant to work with evacuees, and the area’s bail bondsmen agree, noting that evacuees make high flight risks. Bondsmen also note that they have already lost a great deal of money on evacuees who have fled the state, leading many in the industry to refuse 10 percent bonds.

Bail Bondsman Finds Unique Marketing Strategy
Milford area bail bondsman Bryan Cuzino runs Premier Bail Bonds in Bridgeport. Last year, he decided to set up a page on the popular site MySpace, which is usually used for social networking. In addition to giving Cuzino a chance to share some personal interests, the page seems to be garnering some business. He reports that some of his clients have found him through his MySpace page.

Bail Bondsman Clears His Name
The case of Richard Schenecker is over – and he has been found not guilty of unlawful use of a weapon. A St. Joseph resident charged the bail bondsman for almost shooting her while he was trying to arrest a fugitive. Schenecker has maintained that the 2005 incident saw the fugitive fire the shot that injured the bystander.

Bondsmen Have a Dangerous Job
Police in Canyon County have reason to believe that resident Anthony Joseph Bosworth killed his bail bondsman within twelve hours of being released from jail. Bosworth himself was killed in a shootout with police this past week. The body of bail bondsman Joshua Schmidt was found in the Elmore County desert. Police are investigating the homicide and the events that led up to Bosworth’s death. So far, they believe that Bosworth killed Schmidt in Schmidt’s own car and then moved the body to the desert. Until this past week, Bosworth was in jail on a domestic battery charge.
