Jail Crowding a Key Concern For Everyone in the Justice System
LAFAYETTE, LA - The overcrowded Lafayette Parish Correctional Center is creating debate. The state has an inmate population of 791 per 100,000 people, one of the highest in the world. This past month, the correctional center decided to relieve overcrowding by releasing misdemeanor offenders on a court summons instead of bonds. Both bondsmen and authorities have voiced concerns that the move will lead to higher numbers of fugitives and more crime.
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Bail bondsman David Dunn said he was a split second from kicking in an apartment door when his partner Carol Franklin yelled because the woman on the other side had a gun. Franklin said she normally doesn't go to the back window or door - she's usually the one kicking in the door. Had she not been at the window, Dunn likely would have been killed. Dunn and Franklin were recognized for doing a dangerous job well.
ORANGE COUNTY, CA - Attorney Joseph G. Cavallo has been sentenced to six months in jail for paying bail bondsmen to refer business to him. The kickback scheme – in which Cavallo paid $50,000 to two bondsmen at Xtreme Bail Bonds – could have netted Cavallo up to three years in jail. The bondsmen have each received four-month terms.
"I have been advertising my law firm in Missouri with AboutBail.com for a little over a month and have already received four cases that paid for many years with AboutBail.com. The advertising is very cost-effective for the coverage and exposure my firm receives."
