The AboutBail.com staff has had plenty of news to keep track of this week. From the conclusion of a high-profile trial to news of a new show of interest to bail professionals, here are the stories that caught our attention this week:
Campbells Convicted, Bail Bondsman in the Case Not Convicted
Jay Campbell, the former Lonoke chief of police and his wife, Kelly Campbell were convicted for a combined total of 50 charges in Lonoke County. Following a high-profile trial that had many questioning the way the bond and bail industry works, the Campbells were found guilty by a jury. Charges against the couple include conspiracy, theft of services, manufacture of methamphetamine, and other charges. This Tuesday, Jay Campbell was sentenced to a maximum of 315 years in prison, while his wife was sentenced to 303 years and one month. Bail bondsman Bobby Junior Cox had been implicated in some of the Campbells' activities, but his portion of the case was declared a mistrial. (Cabot Star-Herald, Apr. 18, 2007)
Interesting Case of Changing Bail
In many trials, bail is set and defendants can either pay the amount or not. However, setting bail is not always so simple or straightforward. A judge overseeing a case involving a car crash in Woodside changed bail amounts twice in one week. Judge Jonathan Karesh changed his mind about the bail he set for a fatal accident that claimed the life of a young girl. Bail was changed from $50,000 to $350,000. The defendant, Richard Tom, sought a bail bondsman. Tom's attorney was pleased that the judge had changed his mind about the no-bail status that was originally placed on Tom. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office Setting Up Bail Games to Raise Funds for Charity
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is raising funds for Relay for Life by holding their annual Jail N Bail fundraiser again. The event will take place on Friday April 20, 2007. The event is staffed by "transport officers," "warrant officers," and "bondsmen." The idea is that the public will go to the Sheriff's Office to buy warrants for $5.00 each. Then, each "Jail Bird" will have to raise a specific amount of money in order to buy their freedom. All money raised goes to the American Cancer Society. The event promises to be a lot of fun and much safer than most bail professional workdays. (Cherokee Sentinel, Apr. 18, 2007)
Montgomery Accused Uses False Name, Sharp-Eyed Bondsman Discovers the Fraud
A Montgomery woman named Odessa Parks was arrested on prostitution charges and got out of jail quickly by hiring the services of a bail bondsman to post bond. The woman was arrested shortly afterwards on the same charges, but this time her bail bondsman, Matt Kallman, noticed something strange: The woman claiming to be Odessa Parks was in fact Evelyn Brown, a woman with two serious felonies. Parks would not have qualified for bail and it appeared that she used her mother's name when arrested. Brown is now in jail with no bond, but Kallman is still on the hook for the bond, since Odessa Parks did not show up for court. Brown may face additional forgery charges in the case, but authorities are not surprised by her actions, noting that many people try to use false names for bail. (WSFA 12, Apr. 18, 2007)
New Reality Series Shines the Spotlight on Women Bounty Hunters
The WE Channel is launching a new reality show, "Wife, Mom, Bounty Hunter" is all about a woman bounty hunter. The show follows the real-life work of successful Arizona bounty hunting professionals. Already, though, the show has garnered some controversy and a scene in which the bounty hunter goes shopping for guns is being dropped in the first episode, due to the tragedy at Virginia Tech. The first episode airs Friday night at 9 on WE.
