This past week, the staff at AboutBail.com were reading stories about silly criminals, savvy bondsmen, bounty hunters accused, and legislation. Here were the stories that fired our imaginations this week:
Update: Mexico Frees Americans Held as Bounty Hunters
MEXICO - Last week, the staff at AboutBail.com - not to mention people across the country - were following the story of five Americans accused of acting as bounty hunters in Mexico. The five were arrested in Naco, Sonora, on May 2, because bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico. This week, though, the five men have been released, because a Mexican prosecutor found that there was a lack of evidence. The five -- Raul Arellanes Valdez, Richard Polanco, Richard Polanco Jr., Harold Lewis, and a 13-year old - are all back in the US now. (NogalesInternation.com, May 8, 2007)
Bounty Hunter Trial Reveals Disturbing Details
TENNESSEE - The murder trial of Carter County bounty hunter Robert Miller continued this past week. Miller is charged with rape and felony murder, stemming from the 2004 death of Kristal Dubuque, who was Miller's employee. Prosecutors released graphic details of the way Dubuque was attacked and strangled and they pointed out that Miller's story about the events of the 2004 day when the murder victim died have changed four times. Miller is pleading not guilty to the charges. His attorneys point out that someone dumped the murder victim's car by a lake after the murder. The fingerprints found on the car did not belong to Miller. (TriCities.com, May 8, 2007)
At Least Two Celebrity Bounty Hunters Are Interested in Australian Opportunity
AUSTRAILIA - Organized crime czar Tony Mokbel is a wanted man, with a $1 million bounty on him. Now, two famous bounty hunters have expressed interest in pursuing the gangland kingpin themselves, arguing that private bounty hunters are the most cost and time effective ways to find the felon. Leonard Padilla, star of a National Geographic Channel documentary, and Duane "Dog" Chapman, star of the TV hit, Dog the Bounty Hunter, both want to claim the prize. (News.com.au, May 6, 2007)
New Immigration Enforcement Program Makes Bail Trickier For Some
NORTH CAROLINA - A new immigration enforcement program may be making it harder for Hispanics to get family members out of jail, according to some reports. The 287(g) program gives local authorities the training and the authorization to locate, process and detain illegal immigrants. However, family members who have already paid bond on a family member who is processed for deportation or is charged with immigration offences need to prove that the family member is in the process of being deported in order to get their bond money back. Some bondsmen point out that the legal status of Hispanic clients makes them turn customers away while others point out that returning the money in situations like this is only ethical. Ultimately, family members who are not aware of the fact that their loved one is being processed for deportation when they post bond can wait until the case is disposed or the charges are dismissed in order to get their money back. They can also petition the court to recoup the funds. (Burlington Times, May 7, 2007)
Bail Jumper Makes Easy Work for Bail Bondsman
ARKANSAS - Usually, bondsmen need to work to find jail jumpers who have not showed up to court on outstanding warrants. For Chris Anderson of Big Daddy Bail Bonds, this is not always the case. A careless jail jumper made work very easy indeed for Anderson this past week. Ledesma Juan Sanchez, wanted on several charges and accused of jumping bail, was in the parking lot of the Independence County District Courthouse when Anderson spotted him. Anderson was able to arrest Sanchez and Chasity Dawn Quinn, who was also wanted on outstanding warrants. The arresting officers were even able to recover illegal drugs inside the vehicle when making the arrest. (Batesville Daily Guard, May 4, 2007)
