Mug Shots Not Just Used by Bondsmen

TAMPA, FL -- The sheriffs’ offices in Florida post mug shots online, but Florida has recently found that criminals have been using mug shots for identity theft – downloading the pictures and using them to create fake IDs. As a result, at least one local sheriff's office, the Hillsborough sheriff’s office, has been adding watermarks to each photo to prevent criminals from tampering with the images. There are about 200 mug shots taken in Hillsborough daily and these photos are part public records, used by probation officers, police, bondsmen, and other professionals.
