Each week AboutBail combs the web for the latest and most interesting industry news stories to bring you the Weekly Bail Blotter.

Bondsman Claims Charges Are Racially Motivated

SMITHFIELD, NC -- Niki Deshawn Daniels of DNA Bail Bonds was arrested last year for obstructing justice, unlawful business associations, perjury, fraudulent practices, and making dishonest statements. Police and investigators claim that Daniels may have done business with someone who had their bondsman’s license revoked and allege that Daniels made false statements in an affidavit. However, Daniels’ wife and business partner claims the charges are false and are racially motivated. She claims that the error on the affidavit was a mistake and that Daniels did not associate with a bondsman without a license but was rather bailing out a friend who had lost their license.

Bondsman Admits to Bribery

BROWNSVILLE, TX -- Bondsman Francisco Cisneros has admitted to bribing a judge and has been sentenced to 16 months. Cisneros pleaded guilty and admitted that he paid someone $2000 to bribe then-District Judge Abel C. Limas for an illegal immigrant case. Limas has admitted to racketeering. Larger bond companies, however, defend the “credit bail,” saying that the lower amount allows defendants who could not otherwise afford it the chance to get out of jail pending a trial. The Professional Bail Agents of Idaho will be advocating for a bill in the near future to ban credit bails or to limit them.

Are Bondsmen Responsible for Re-Arrested Defendants?

CONCORD, NH -- Free Bail Bonds of Nevada is fighting a bail bond forfeiture of $11,000 in court, noting that the defendant was in jail in Vermont during his court date, so he could not make his court date in New Hampshire. According to Free Bail Bonds, they cannot be held accountable if the defendant misses a court date because he is in jail due to an act of government. The case is before the highest court in New Hampshire and the result may determine precedents for other similar cases.
