Bondsman’s Tip Sparks Reprimand

BROOKSVILLE, FL – Crime analyst Teresa Garcia of the Hernando County Sheriff's Office has been reprimanded after using a Crime Stoppers tipster’s name in an email. The case involves the capture of Edward Gaither, a long-wanted suspect in battery cases. The problem began when the tipster turned out to be Gaither’s bondsman. The Florida bail bondsman sent in information about Gaither’s whereabouts, leading to Gaither’s arrest. The bondsman had previously called in similar tips. Garcia was reportedly unhappy that the bondsman was using Crime Stoppers to track down a skip and the bondsman was unhappy with Garcia’s tone. According to authorities, bondsmen are not eligible for rewards from Crime Stoppers, but are not banned from calling Crime Stoppers with tips. There is a policy, however, that prevents tipsters from being told not to offer tips – something that Garcia reportedly told the bondsman.

Bondsman Who Found Abused Child Speaks Out

CLAYCOMO, MO – Kevin Vetsch, a Missouri bail bondsman, of Freedom Bail Bonds was working when he was trying to verify the address of James C. Simpson. Simpson had allegedly written a bad check. When Vetsch arrived at the home, however, he found a toddler alone in a filthy residence. According to the bondsman, the home was unsafe for the child and he called police. Simpson returned home and was arrested by police. He is being held after being unable to post a $50,000 cash-only bond. He has been charged with stealing and one count of child endangerment.

Bondsman Arrested for Soliciting

HUTCHINSON, KS – Dwight Jurgens, a Kansas bail bondsman, of TNT Bonding has been arrested by police for soliciting prostitution. The charges come after an investigation into Jurgens’ actions.  The investigation is ongoing but Jurgens is reportedly accused of trading bail bonds for sexual favors.  It is expected that the bondsman will be formally charged next week.

Newspaper Alleges that the Baltimore Bail System is Flawed

BALTIMORE, MD – The North Country Gazette has published an article based on the Justice Policy Institute (JPI) report about bail reform. That report includes a number of interviews with Baltimore residents who are unhappy with the bail bond system, saying that it discriminates against low-income defendants, keeping them in a cycle of jail and poverty. Interviewees expressed the belief that bail is a burden for families and in some cases families become heavily indebted to Maryland bondsmen to get a loved one out of jail.

New Office Space Near Jail May be Opportunity for Bondsmen

DOUGLASVILLE, GA – A plan for new commercial space near the Douglas County jail has been approved. The new commercial office space will include two new buildings at 8473 Earl D. Lee Boulevard, according to developer and builder Trey Robinson. The first building could be open as soon as January. According to experts, there is a need for Georgia bondsmen and attorneys in the area, due to the new jail, and the new office space will be able to accommodate this need.

Duane “Dog” Chapman’s New Show Could be Interesting to Bondsmen

HOLLYWOOD, CA – Many bondsmen have stated in interviews that Duane “Dog” Chapman’s former show, Dog the Bounty Hunter, depicted an unrealistic view of the industry. The show was cancelled after eight seasons. Now, it appears that Chapman may get a new show – one that appeals more to bondsmen. The new show, Dog, will air on CMT and will have Chapman and his wife offering advice to bondsmen about business and bounty hunting skills.
