DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- According to one local bondsman, at any time there are about 40 skips being sought by bondsmen in Volusia County for skipping a court date. Tracking down defendants who have missed a court date can be a dangerous, expensive, and time-consuming. Most bail bond companies in the area have insurance which can pay for the bond forfeit if the bondsman does not have the money to do so. According to Scott Foster of Ace Bail Bonds, most people who jump bail are bailed on smaller cash bails for smaller crimes. In Florida, bondsmen are the ones who need to make the arrests in cases like these, but most bondsmen work with private investigators and bounty hunters, who comb phone records, social media, and use GPS devices to track missing defendants.
