OAKLEY, CA -- It’s not often that bail is set in the millions, but Stephen Clark recently had his bail set at $8.675 million. Clark faces charges in an incident in which he allegedly kidnapped and raped a woman. Clark remains in the jail. According to prosecutors, the high bail was set because Clark has a record of sexual crime offenses.

PORTLAND, OR -- Oregon is one of a few states that do not permit bail bondsmen. According to some bondsmen in surrounding states, including Idaho and Vancouver, many defendants on the run go to Oregon – and especially Portland – to escape the law. Budget cuts in the state also means that warrants served in Oregon on those who fail to show up in court do not generally get passed on to other jurisdictions.
Bondsman Arrested for Marketing to Inmates
MIAMI, FL -- Bondsman Jacqueline C. Canela was arrested after police say that she solicited business at the Monroe County Jail by paying inmates to drum up new clients. She faces five counts of illegally soliciting bonds. Police were alerted of the activity by a tip and when they reviewed recorded jail phone calls, they found that illegal solicitation was taking place. Police are still investigating the case and further arrests may be made.
